When you schedule training, a more thorough, detailed and training-specific FAQ Sheet will be emailed to you with all the info you could need and want. These are to hold you over for now.
Great question! Somewhere around the age of 5 is about when a child is ready to begin a journey. As soon as your child has the coordination to do jumping jacks - they're ready! And I have personally worked out with exceptional martial artists in their 90s - so you're never too old. We can adapt anything and everything to any limitations you may have.
No prior experience is necessary.
Nope! You’re welcome to wear whatever you’re comfortable in.
That said, a gi can help you move more freely, protect your skin, and give you that satisfying snap when your technique is on point. It also adds to the focus, tradition, and unity of training—plus, they’re built to last. If you are going to make a purchase we have definite suggestions on what to get, if you’re interested.
Otherwise, we bring any and all equipment needed with us.
We are more than happy to provide private 1:1 training or small group training.
We recommend groups of 2-6 for the most well-rounded and best experience that also ensures each individual gets the attention they need and deserve, however we are willing to train up to 10 in a session.
Larger groups can be accommodated with special arrangements.
It depends on your group and your needs.
Sessions with 2-3 or less people along with sessions with younger children are best kept at 30-45 minutes as otherwise it can become information overload.
Groups of 5+ that are ages 10+ may want to enjoy 75-90 minute classes.
It depends on your learning style and your personal needs and desires.
Along with your private training you also get access to online content that allows you to learn as often as you wish. Some like to learn through the videos and only want one lesson a month to ensure they're on the right track. Others enjoy bi-weekly training while some prefer having classes twice per week. We will set up your training to meet your needs.
We gladly provide regular training in the following cities: Roseville, Fraser, Warren, Eastpointe, Harper Woods, St. Clair Shores, Grosse Pointe Woods, Grosse Pointe Farms, Grosse Pointe Park, Grosse Pointe Grosse Pointe Shores, Center Line, Hazel Park, Madison Heights, Hamtramck, Highland Park, Sterling Heights, Mount Clemens, Royal Oak & Ferndale.
We can also provide less frequent training in: Rochester, Rochester Hills, Pontiac, Lake Angelus, Walled Lake, Livonia, Canton, Plymouth, Westland, Shelby Township, Macomb Township, New Baltimore, Richmond, Ann Arbor, Saline, Grand Blanc, Fenton, Lakeport, & Marine City.
For areas further out, online martial arts training is possible - however, only for ages 10+. While we are confident in providing adapted training for any special needs, if the goal is to address behavioral challenges an online arrangement may or may not be successful - depending on the child.
The cost of training depends on a few factors, like where you're located and how often you train. Because of this, your pricing is just as personal as your journey.
For local training, you can expect a ballpark of $397-$997 per month depending on the frequency of lessons or 175-199/session if you prefer to buy packages of lessons.
It's also possible to train completely online. Starting at $129/mo you can enjoy access to online videos to learn at your pace while being supported with one or more video sessions each month.
Not exactly.
While we teach the IKCA system of Chinese Kenpo, we also add a modern, adaptive lens. This is personal training—fully tailored to your needs.
Most often, every class you can expect to begin with a moment of meditation, enjoy a little cardio and working on basics and end with meditation and a traditional close. On top of that we may work with various pads or a life-size dummy. We could work on forms or run drills. And sometimes our training can lead to conversations or exercises around real-life applications.
Again, you have control over your journey - this can be as structured or as casual as you'd like and we can stick to where you find value.
Because we do offer other types of self-defense, these sessions are grounded in martial arts training.
While you aren't required to learn forms or do any aspect of it - expect to invest heavier in fighting skills (as well as the adaptations that are more appropriate for everyday safety concerns). If you are needing or wanting another foundation in your training (like avoiding, evading or weapons training), we will gladly suggest another offer based on your needs.
We rarely have trouble working with children - even those who labeled aggressive, defiant, uncooperative and/or difficult. At times, it can be a struggle for the families to all train together though. We are very good at building connection and strengthening bonds, but there may be times when 1:1 training with the child is best and others where training will continue without the participation of the child.
Depending on the severity of the child's behavior, we may require that parents take online training and/or coaching on Raising Nonviolent Children. The purpose of training is for success and building confidence. While it may take 2-3 months before a child is accepting of the routine, all of these things can be discussed along the way. However, if a child is genuinely uninterested in karate, we can and will only provide respectful training with all willing parties (it's rarely an issues as we do really well keeping it relevant and interesting).
I’ve been training and teaching karate for over 20 years, with a focus on helping students build skill, confidence, and discipline both on and off the mat.
I'm due to test for my 6th degree and am currently the second-highest-ranking female in my system. I learned under SGM Chuck Sullivan and GM Vic LeRoux, the founders of the IKCA system, and I have had the honor of teaching beside GM Howard Singer. I've had the privilege of training with and alongside multiple members who have been inducted into the Martial Arts Hall of Fame.
In my competitive years, I consistently earned first place in most—if not all—tournaments I entered, excelling in forms and the triathlon.
My approach blends traditional training methods with practical, real-world application, making sessions both challenging and rewarding.
